Gaiters are mandatory gear for snow climbing, but many
hikers don’t use them in hikes through the woods. What are they anyway? Gaiters
wrap around the ankle and attach to the bottom of a hiking boot. They keep
rocks and sticks from getting inside your boots, and they provide warmth in
cold weather. They literally seal your boot to your leg. Low gaiters are good
for woods hiking, and higher ones are better for snow. They add an extra layer
of protection against the snow and ice. Most comprehensive outdoor stores sell
gaiters.
