Stories from the Road

Stories from the road
Snowmass, CO
January 22/23, 2016

More ugliness is in the air in this beautiful mountain resort.  We rode up chair 1 at 8:30 AM this morning with two locals. One man was a manager in a company that ran public transportation in the area. He told me his drivers were being hassled by unruly tourists. They apparently were demanding, often after bouts of heavy drinking. He wasn’t sure what to do. The other man from Brazil said he had been on a lift in between two men, who almost came to blows, when one man lowered the safety bar on the other man’s head.

The four of us also discussed a recent incident that is the talk of the town.  A photographer was riding the chairlift a few days ago with a local guy he didn’t know. He made an innocuous comment that the other passenger took  as  a slight. He then pushed the photographer off the chairlift to the snow 25 feet below. The victim was unhurt. He waited on the trail to confront his aggressor, who disappeared down another trail. Cameras have revealed the identity  of the perpetrator, and apparently an arrest is imminent.

On the brighter side we had a good day on the slopes skiing with Dave and Sharon. At one point we took a catwalk along a ridge at a high elevation. We planned to drop into a trial that we could all ski. Some of the other trails were double black diamond runs that snaked down steep chutes and cliffs. They weren’t for us. When we reached a fork that led to our trail versus a cliff trail, the route wasn’t obvious. We took the wrong one but were able to ski back through some powder to the correct route. It was somewhat daunting!

Today Vicki and I will go to Aspen. It is a rest day, and I am looking forward to seeing what has changed since last year.

Have a good day.
