Outdoor Doc

Q:  What is a good river rafting trip for a family?

A:  I would suggest the Salmon River in central Idaho. It is a wilderness trip with good whitewater that is manageable. Many commercial companies offer trips on this river. Customers camp on sandy beaches and eat wonderful food packed and cooked by the river guides. The only other people you will see are other rafters and kayakers. The scenery along the river is excellent, and you can expect to see wildlife such as bears, mountain goats, and deer.

Q:  I would like to climb Mt. Blanc. Is that possible?

A:  Yes it is, under certain conditions. Unless you are an experienced mountaineer, you will need to hire a guide. The Chamonix Mountain Guides provide such a service. You also need to be fit and willing to sleep one night in a rustic lodge with 100 or so other people. Prior to your climb you will need to learn how to use crampons. Talk with your guide well before the trip to learn what gear is necessary. You will need Gortex pants and jacket. Of course, proper mountaineering boots are essential. The trip takes two days, and is rigorous.
