Adaptive Defenses

George Valliant wrote about higher and lower level defense mechanisms in his book Adaptation to Life. More adaptive people used defenses like sublimation, humor, anticipation, and altruism. Less adaptive people in his study were more apt to use primitive denial, projection, and fantasy as a way to protect themselves.
