Movie Review: Gifted
Gifted
Last night I saw Gifted at the local Cineopolis. I thought it would be a fun movie, but it was better than I expected.
The story centers on a child genius, seven year old Mary, who is being raised by her uncle following the suicide of her brilliant, but troubled mother. A custody battle ensues between the maternal grandmother, who wants to showcase Mary’s talents and her son, who wants Mary to have a normal upbringing and not end up like her mother, who led a joyless, sad life.
The girl who plays Mary steals the movie, but the other actors are all very good. The movie has a nice pace to it, and has a reasonable, satisfying ending. Psychologists will like the skilled presentation of dysfunctional family dynamics within Mary’s extended family.
