Retirement Tips

Retirement for many presents a developmental challenge. Though it is an opportunity for fun activities, more time with family, travel, and reflection, it can be daunting. Anxiety over money, health, and an uncertain future plague many.  Whereas work has filled up most people’s calendar, now the retiree has a blank canvas. To make retirement work well takes effort, thought, and the willingness to try new things. Here are some suggestions to think about.

1.    Have a clear understanding of your finances and keep abreast of their fluctuations.
2.    Think through what you really like to do and try to do it.
3.    Reach out and network. Take ownership of your social life.
4.    Stay healthy. Regularly see your internist, ophthalmologist, and dentist. See specialists as necessary.
5.    Stay fit. Try to exercise every day. Make your exercise fun.
6.    Structure your days. Build variety into your life. Go to new places.
7.    Make realistic travel plans.  Don’t try to do too much. Make sure you have time to enjoy places. Hyperactive travel is tiresome and not fun.
8.    Pursue some hobbies; take a course, read new books. Keep your mind active.

9.    Reevaluate your plan as you go along. If you don’t feel fulfilled, try something else.
