I recently saw the movie Menashe at the Angelika Film Center in Carmel Mountain Ranch. This independent film, which feels like a documentary, tells the story of a man embedded in the Hasidic Jewish culture of New York City. Having lost his wife, the main character, who is poor at life skills, fights to keep his son with him. The local rabbi has other ideas, and thus the movie goes on.
The movie presents a fascinating glimpse into a subculture, which most people will never see. Menashe is both poignant and thought provoking. It is hard to find good independent films these days that play at local theaters. If you get a chance, go see it.
