Slow Play

Recently I played behind two foursomes of seniors “playing a match” at Encinitas Ranch. I knew they were serious because they had matching shirts. They were very slow in spite of the marshal talking with them a number of times.  Here are some suggestions.

1.    They ambled. Walk fast and get off the green quickly when you are finished.
2.    When the first person has finished putting, he should pick up the flagstaff and everyone should pick up their clubs as soon as they have finished putting.
3.    No talking on the green after everyone has holed out.
4.    Mark you score down on the way to the next hole.

A good way to think about golf is that people on the course playing at any one time make up a community. We all need to be aware of each other and be considerate of those in front and behind us.  Your green fees don’t entitle you to play slowly and treat every putt as if the Master’s title was on the line.

I understand the spirit of competition in our lives, but it helps all to have a bigger perspective than our individual round.
