The Hate You Give

I recently saw this movie at Cineopolis in Del Mar. It tells the story of an African American high school student caught between two diverse cultures, that of her private school and that of her crime-ridden neighborhood. Her childhood friend is shot by an anxious policeman in her presence, thus creating an outpouring of rage from her community. In the midst of all this, the heroine is trying to grow up and navigate a relationship with her Caucasian boyfriend. The movie could be stereotypical, but it is not due to the outstanding performance by the lead, Amandala Stenberg.
In light of what is going on in our country, this is an important movie to see.
